How to Hang a Tapestry

A tapestry is a fine addition when decorating your walls, but if you already have one, you’ve probably come upon an important question: how do you hang it up? Well, don’t worry: this simple process will help you get your tapestry up in no time.

The first step is to determine whether your tapestry is finished or unfinished. This is easier than it sounds. All you have to do is examine the back of the tapestry. If the tapestry is finished, you will find a backing on the weave, probably silk or satin, and a rod pocket or loops at the top of the tapestry. If it is unfinished, you will be able to see the threads of the fabric design through the back of the tapestry, creating an image that looks kind of like the negative of a photograph.

Unfortunately, if the tapestry is unfinished, you will need to speak with a professional before moving forward. You’ll have to decide whether to have the professional hang it as it is, unfinished, or if you’ll have someone finish it instead. Expense here depends on the professional and what you decide.

But if the tapestry is finished, then you’re in luck! Because from this point on, it’s easy. In fact, hanging a finished tapestry is as easy as hanging curtains. You get a wooden rod–even a simple dowel will do, if you tap a nail in at each end, leaving an inch or two, to serve as a finial–and you run it through the rod pocket or loops. For the best quality look, get an artful curtain rod with carved finials on it. Then, using cup hooks or decorative brackets, mount the rod onto the wall (make sure you use a leveler to keep it straight!) and hang the tapestry.

That’s all there is to it! Check whether it’s finished or unfinished, then hang it like a curtain. Some sources advocated using Velcro to hang a tapestry, but that requires the advice and expertise of a professional or your tapestry may be damaged, so it is not recommended.
