If you want to add a fireplace to your home, a great option is the gas fireplace. Most designs today are made to look like natural wood fireplaces, both with ceramic or fiberglass logs and with a flame and scent that remind you of natural wood burning. There are three types of gas fireplaces to consider: the direct vent, top vent, and vent-free models.
Direct vent models have two vent pipes that lead directly outside. One of these is used to pull in air for combustion in the fireplace, so that the fire burns properly. This could be a problem in extremely humid or extremely dry climates, though, and you may need to check with a professional to make sure that the fire will burn properly with extra-moist or extra-dry air from outside. The second vent pipe serves to release the gases and smoke formed by the fire outside, so you don’t have to breathe it in yourself.
Top vent models are designed to work in original masonry fireplaces. Whereas the direct vent model pulls air in from outside, the top vent model uses air already present in the home for combustion. This solves issues with weather, but you want to make sure your home doesn’t get too stuffy and has good airflow to help this process. The vent for this model is on the top, so that any excess gases travel up an existing chimney. Of course, you need to have an existing fireplace for this model to work.
Vent-free models do not have any pipes leading outside or to an existing chimney. Instead, these have oxygen-depletion sensors that will cut the gas and shut the fireplace off when the amount of oxygen in the house reaches minimum safe levels. Despite the claims of manufacturers about the safety of these fireplaces, many states do not allow the installation of vent-free gas fireplaces, so check your local laws before you buy one. If you do get one, the odor will be minimal and you can avoid issues with weather even if you don’t have a chimney already.
Fireplaces are a great addition to any home, both as decoration and as a functional heater. Consider gas fireplaces, and especially the direct vent model, top vent model, and vent-free model to make your home more complete and luxurious.
